Dome's death riddle

Did the Millennium Dome site kill Joe Ferguson? He spent four years working on a massive clean-up of the poisoned area in Greenwich, South London.

Carcinogenic chemicals, including arsenic and benzene, were dug up from the old gas works - the largest in Europe.

Senior works manager Joe lived and worked there between 1996 and 1999. After he finished, he moved to Spain to start a new life.

But aged 51 he was diagnosed with untreatable cancer. Two months later he was dead.

The cancer that riddled his body had begun with an unusual type of bladder tumour - one often linked to exposure to industrial contamination, such as that found at an old gas works.

It could be a coincidence. But we spoke to another former Dome site worker who developed stomach cancer in his 20s and only just survived major surgery.

"It was a close-run thing," he said. "I have always wondered whether my cancer was linked to the Dome site."
