THE Government wants two million people to take part in large scale athletics events in the run up to the 2012 Olympics, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said yesterday.
The Great North Run will be used as a template for a series of "Great" events across the UK, Ms Jowell told Labour's conference in Manchester.
Former athlete and sports commentator Brendon Foster - who founded the Great North Run - is set to expand his portfolio to also include swimming, cycling and dance."Our shared aim is that by 2012, two million people will be taking part in these events," Ms Jowell said. The "2million for 2012" campaign will be launched in May next year.
But Ms Jowell said preparations for the London Olympics would also go beyond sport, announcing that from 2008 - when Liverpool becomes the European Capital of Culture - a Cultural Olympiad will take place across the country "showcasing the best of British art, culture and heritage".
