Sustainable Procurement Strategy still being planned

The Olympic organising committee has been “inundated” with enquiries from waste and recycling companies wanting to be involved with the 2012 games environmental project manager Phil Cummings said. But he added that a sustainable procurement strategy did not yet exist for the 2012 games as it was “in planning at the moment”. Cummings said tendering opportunities would be announced from about 2009 onwards with waste and cleaning opportunities announced around 2010.

The 2012 Olympics has made a commitment to being a low carbon, zero waste games. With 33 competition venues, 41 training venues, as well as numerous villages and media centres, it will require “robust waste management facilities” said Cummings. He added that the aim was for closed loop waste management at all venues, including high quality front of house waste separation facilities.
